Planning a photoshoot can seem overwhelming, especially if it's your first one. The mix of excitement and a little nervousness is completely normal. This guide is here to help you prepare for your upcoming photoshoot with Ali Watson Photography, ensuring you and your loved ones are feeling ready, confident, and relaxed. From expectations during the shoot to managing those anxious feelings, you'll find everything you need right here.
Getting Ready for Your Photoshoot
Preparation is essential for a successful photoshoot. To make the most of your time in front of the camera, start choosing your outfits and props well in advance. It is important when choosing what to wear to dress appropriately for the setting, ideally choosing clothing which complements the surrounds. For example earthly tones or pastel colours, and flowy fabrics work well for outdoor shoots.
Think about the mood you want to convey. Whether you aim for casual, playful, or elegant, select clothing that reflects your personality and feels comfortable.
If you are booked on for one of our group sessions, it's a good idea to choose a colour palette and mix and match outfits within that range, avoid wearing identical clothes, but wear something that will help portray you and your personality, opt for complementary colours and style.
Did you know?
Studies show that wearing something you love can increase confidence by up to 30%, which will shine through in your photos!
Another key aspect is your hair and makeup. Even if you prefer a natural look, a little styling can make a significant difference on camera. You don’t need to go all out—a touch of foundation or a bit of lipstick can enhance your features. If makeup isn't your strong suit, ask a friend for help or consider hiring a professional artist.
Also, plan your schedule for the shoot day. Ensure you allow yourself ample time to avoid rushing. Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes before the session starts. Having the extra time allows us to properly introduce ourselves, discuss any nerves or worries, share possible pose suggestions and what you (the client) might want to get out from the session.
Choosing the Location
The location of your photoshoot can greatly affect the vibe and quality of your photos. Discuss potential spots with Ali Watson, the more personal, the better. Your choice maybe a favourite dog work, a park or woodland which hold precious family memories, or a familiar environment, somewhere warm and cozy, such as the family home. This can be discussed, when booking the session and needs to be confirmed before the day of the shoot, to avoid confusion and lateness for both parties.
Natural light is often the most flattering and can create stunning images—think golden hour during sunrise or sunset. For this reason, I predominantly use natural lighting within my photography, although there may be some occasions where artificial lighting may be used. So with this in mind please consider the available lighting when picking a location.
Dealing with Anxious Nerves
Feeling nervous before stepping in front of the camera is entirely normal. Here are some strategies to help ease those jitters:
Breathe: Take a moment to focus on your breathing. Deep breaths can help calm your nerves. Try inhaling for a count of four and exhaling for a count of six. Doing this for just a few minutes can ground you.
Visualize: Picture yourself having a fantastic time during the shoot. Visualizing positive outcomes can help switch your focus from anxiety to excitement. Imagine enjoying the process of trying new poses and laughing with all involved.
Communicate: Don’t hesitate to share your feelings with me. Whether you’re anxious or unsure about something, open communication is key. I hope to provide a warm and approachable environment for all my clients, so please speak out if you are unsure, and I can hopefully provide some reassurance and guidance.
Focus on Fun: Shift your focus from the camera to enjoying the moment. Play a favorite song before the shoot, reminisce about happy memories, or bring a small item that makes you smile. Joyful moments lead to candid, authentic photos.
During my photography sessions I hope to make the experience fun for everyone, in doing so I may throw in some random but fun games, grandmas footsteps, tig (tag), Simon Says, Races. So if there is a family favourite, please let me know, and we can see about including it into the session.
